Katolicyzm lub Protestantyzm : Since pre-historic times in Europe, festivities (bonfires, offrerings) were marking the beginning of longer hours of daylight with fires and ritual. The Roman festival of Saturnalia lasted several days in December (gambling and offerings). Germanic tribes also celebrated mid-winter (drinking and rituals). The Bulgarian (with Koleduvane) and the Polish (with Gwiazdka) perpetuate this tradition. Jesus of Nazareth was probably born in springtime (Reformists favour autumn). But in the 4th century, December 25th was chosen for the celebration of his birth by Pope Julius I (Bishop Liberus is also mentioned in 354 A.D.). Thus, a Christian element was introduced in the long-established mid-winter festivals. Before 1582, the Papal States and other Italian city states celebrated New Years Day on Christmas Day

Kultura : Bechtelistag Frauenfeld: Berchtold's Day marks a custom which dates back to the Middle Ages. Shortly after the town of Frauenfeld was founded in the middle of the thirteenth century, nobles and members of the higher classes of society started to socialise regularly. They called themselves the Constables' Association . In 1430 another association was formed by tradesmen, who named themselves Zum wilden Mann ( The Savage Man ) and also ran their own drinking establishment. In 1640 the two associations combined into one, creating a new association which owned goods, granted loans and collected interest. Members met at the beginning of the year for the presentation of the accounts and to celebrate with food and drink. www.lebendige-traditionen.ch

The highlight is the fish procession, which takes place once every three years and sees around 1,200 participants delighting 15,000 spectators.
